Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
As a possible and serious condition following a traumatic event, posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) often entails disability, comorbidity and damaged life functions. Left untreated, patients are at risk of future relational, social and employment difficulties, entailing extensive psychiatric resources and social support. Children and adolescents represent a high-risk group as the condition can lead to developmental impairments, and finding effective treatments is imperative. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback which enables real time viewing of brain activity, thus allowing patients to view their EEG visualized on a screen with the goal of normalizing the activity pattern. The present study sought to examine with thematic analysis how youth refugee patients at a clinic for traumatized patients experienced neurofeedback in order to contribute knowledge towards better utilization of the treatment. Subsidiary questions included positive and negative effects, changes in PTSD-symptoms, patient understanding of the method and suggestions for method improvement. Results indicated generally positive views of the treatment with patient experiences of several positive effects including improved PTSD-symptoms, increased sense of hope, agency, self-awareness, and better control over reactions. Patients reported importance of treatment enjoyment related to neurofeedback components as well as importance of good patient-therapist interactions. The few negative effects reported included memories being triggered, nightmares and physical reactions to the neurofeedback components. Patients indicated a mixed understanding of neurofeedback and had several suggestions for improvements. (Less)
