Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to investigate how social counsellors employed in health care reasoned on transgender persons as a group and their work with transgender persons, as well as analyse the knowledge they use in that work. The method used for collecting data was qualitative interviews with social counsellors working in health care. Social counsellors interviewed were selected by way of convenience sample and their answers were analysed using theory of knowledge and categorization theory. The conclusion of the thesis is that the social counsellors viewed transgender persons as fragile individuals with a vast spectrum of problems. In spite of this the counsellors did not treat transgender persons any differently from other clients they saw. The social counsellors lacked technological knowledge, that is knowledge on transgender persons as a group and the specific problems of this group. Instead they tended to rely on practical knowledge to a large extent, such as understanding and empathy. The social counsellors lack of knowledge on specific issues of the transgender group as well as their ambitions to normalize and not categorize this group could lead to inferior health care for transgender persons. The thesis hints that further study in this field is needed to determine whether transgender persons would possibly receive better health care if social counsellors were better educated on specific transgender issues.
