Abstract
The aim of this study is to illustrate the complex phenomena of workrelatad violence within the emergency care, and explain the phenomena by applying a perspective of sociology of law. Our interest emerged from the frequent reports about emergency personnel being threatened and abused by patients. Our main question is: "How do healthcare personnel perceive work related violence?”.
We used the method of qualitative interviews with emergency personnel and security personnel from different hospitals in the south of Sweden, with the ambition to understand the personnels subjective experiences, feelings and opinions about work related violence. We used the method of qualitative interviews with emergency personnel and security personnel from different hospitals in the south of Sweden, with the ambition to understand the personnels subjective experiences, feelings and opinions about work related violence. We also strived to learn about their experiences of social and legal norms interacting at the emergency department.
Two theories were tried against the data. Firstly a normative theory was used to understand why conflicts and violence emerges, and which norms are interacting within the department of emergency care. Secondly we used David Garlands theory of risk, hoping to understand how the measures are creating a safe and secure environment, protecting the personnel from threats and violence. The theory of risk also provides a analytical understanding of how the situation within the healthcare is a part of bigger societal changes.
The healthcare personnel had a complex view of work related violence and its social and legal norms surrounding the phenomena. We claim that open discussions between all involved parties would contribute to an better understanding of the dimensions of work related violence and therefore better preventive measures. (Less)
