- Abstract
- This dissertation has examined Fjällrävens backpack Kånken, and its interconnection with the individual's social identity, as well as the group affiliation to the style culture indie. The study has also treated Kånken and its expression of fashion in connection with the style culture indie. In the answering of questions we have conducted an ethnographic study, with a total of 8 people being interviewed. The analysis was based on the empirical study and complemented by theories of fashion and antifashion, consumption and identity, symbolic capital and the style culture indie.
As a result of this study, we found that Kånken can be a symbolic expression of the individual's identity as well as group affiliation for the alternative style.... As a result of this study, we found that Kånken can be a symbolic expression of the individual's identity as well as group affiliation for the alternative style. Nevertheless, Kånken can not in itself be a symbolic expression for indie, because Kånken is a part of a widespread fashion. Kånken, however, can convey, along with other expressions, the individual's association with indie. Through the analysis, it was discussed that Kånken could instead help to strengthen the style that the individual wants to show. The study also discussed how Kånken was an expression of fashion in relation to indie, when all of the interviewees had no fashion interest, and the majority believed that they did not follow fashion trends. Today, it is complex whether Kånken is an expression of fashion or an antifashion. While Kånken can be considered as part of contemporary fashion, where an indie and alternative style flourish, Kånken does not reflect the rapid changes in fashion and the constant renewal of trends. Which may reflect a new era of fashion. (Less)
