By applying a netnographic research design, this thesis contains a collection of qualitative data that build upon theories derived from the “blogosphere” to understand how the phenomenon of authenticity and identity play out in the context of vlogging. Specifically, the study proceeded from two Australian fashion influencers and compared two selected videos from their YouTube channels. The findings showed that a number of aspects played a significant role in forming identity, in which technological aspects were most prominent. Furthermore, the findings challenge the concept of authenticity in its complex relationship with identity. This research can contribute to current academia by adding knowledge to the studies of how identity can be represented in the blogosphere, as well as provide insight into how authenticity can take on different forms on YouTube.
