- Abstract
- Food is a daily product which has a significant part of private consumption. Just like other goods, food prices tend to fluctuate, depending on a number of factors. An increasingly globalized food production, coupled with increased consumption, makes Swedish food prices more sensitive to outside factors. The increase in imports and the decrease in self-sufficiency means that prices in Sweden are affected to a large extent by the world price and the development of the Swedish krona relative to other currencies. It is clear that the Swedish krona has weakened, relative to the euro, from 2012 until today. This study examines the impact changes of the exchange rate, SEK/euro, has on food prices. The outcome of the study is based partly on established research in the field of macroeconomics and more specific studies on the effects of exchange rate changes and on food prices. In addition, a regression analysis has been conducted to further base the conclusions drawn in the study. The regression analysis shows that the exchange rate has an impact on food prices, more specifically a weakening of the Swedish krona leads to higher food prices. Furthermore, another result of this study is that the exchange rate does not have instantaneous impact, but rather have a delayed impact of one month. (Less)
