FABRIK - BUSINESS VIABLE DESIGN STRATEGY

Abstract
There are a lot of “non-design” areas which have a
big influence on design and design strategy. These
are things like business, manufacturing, marketing,
economics etc. . If a designer fails to understand the
impact of these parameters, even the greatest design
may result in a mediocre product.

In order to be able to create excellent products, it’s
crucial that the designer takes part in these strategic
discussions. Otherwise, major design driving decisions
will be made by other people. Often, these people

don’t have the tools to foresee the consequences of
what they are proposing. But to get a seat at the
table, we as designers must be willing to expand our
comfort zone and put effort into understanding every
aspect of product development.

Therefore, the goal of this project became learning
about how business affects design, and what goes into
creating a brand. I used business methodologies and
techniques to analyse the market situation and then
used this information to create a design brief.

The result is a holistic design strategy based on the
market needs. The design strategy was translated
into a brand concept which was then visualised
with graphic design, establishing a visual identity,
designing accessories and finally designing a
collection of eyewear. (Less)
