Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
Öresund Region is, as of today, the biggest transnational region in Scandinavia. The inauguration of the Öresund Bridge in the year 2000 can be seen as the starting point of the regions rapid growth which has led to its surpassing of Stockholm in size. However, it has yet to fully function as an integral unit and a closer relationship between the economies is crucial for reaching a maximum of its potential.
Looking back at the region before the bridge, it is clear that the ferries played a major role in the passenger traffic across the sound. It was a distinctive way of transport especially for the city of Helsingborg and it has strengthen the town’s reputation throughout the years.
Today, it is still a very popular measure of travelling and the boats are growing in quantity and capacity – mostly to be able to fit in even more commuters in cars. The traditional ferries, the ones accompanying only the passengers travelling by foot, are set to struggle with their business as these bigger companies slowly overtake the market. Despite having a rich history within the local ferry-transport, people nowadays tend to choose the slightly more commercialized and bigger ferries.
Today, there’s only one ferry left that offers the inhabitants the opportunity of a car-free passage across the water. The company has its terminal in one of the oldest buildings in Helsingborg, which is located on Hamntorget right by the central station. This square is currently undergoing a massive redevelopment, consequently being a major point of interest for the municipality. However, it is safe to say that the building hosting the terminal is in no way adjusted for its present function. Therefore, I am of the opinion that a potential relocation of the terminal could be a beneficial way of not only rebranding this classic mean of transport, but also bringing life back to it by satisfying all of the modern city dwellers’ needs. The downward spiral can therefore be broken and the tradition can once again begin to flourish.
The main purpose of this project is to examine how architecture could relate to a place currently under construction, as well as interact with its surroundings and its history. How the utilization of modern architecture could be a way of rebranding a withering tradition as well as generating a new, stronger, appeal for a quality-orientated alternative of travelling by ferry.
