- Abstract
- Bananpiren means the Banana pier and
the name is a remnant from when ships
full of bananas unloaded by the docks. The
last banana ship left the wharf in the year
of 2000 and since then the pier has mainly
been used for different types of temporary
events. Apart from when those are held, the
pier is abandon with only one sheet shed still
standing, as a glimpse of the piers former

Göteborg is currently going through a big

central harbour and industrial areas are going
to be converted into lively city blocks. This
project is called “Älvstaden” (The river city)
and the main strategies for the development
is to “connect the city”, “embrace the water”,
and “reinforce the centre”.
Frihamnen (the freeport) is one of the
areas which is going to be redeveloped in
Älvstaden. Its location makes it strategically
important, it is going to be a key piece of the
puzzle to connect the city over the river. In
order to do this, both physical and mental
bridges need to be built.
It is in this spot I have placed my project. I
have chosen to work with Bananpiren and
Frihamnen in five different scales, spanning
from the urban context to the building. I have
used different strategies in the varied scale
levels, all of them aiming at making Hisingen
a self-evident part of the city core. (Less)
