Purpose: The purpose is to examine/review the benefits of BIM and how they can be achieved in/during the design phase through digitalization in the construction industry. Furthermore, it is investigated how the
design management and BIM coordination differ between the selected fall projects.
Problem formulation:
- Analyze what support the design management has with the help of digital tools such as BIM.
- What BIM benefits are relevant to today’s skills and tools?
- How will BIM be used during the design phase to make the design more effective?
Method: The research strategy is a case study where two case projects have been studied. The study is a qualitative method with an inductive research approach. A pilot study was conducted with unstructured interviews, which led into the literature study. The summary result has in turn been the basis for the main study, for the interviews in the two case projects. The interviews were conducted as semi structured interviews, where the template formed the basis of the
interviews, which were designed for each occasion. The results of the pre-, literature-and main study were finally analyzed and then compiled in a conclusion.
Conclusion: A conclusion that can be drawn in the study is that BIM is not only a digital tool with models in 3D, but a modern working method with a focus on information management, which is a central part of
digitalization in the construction industry. The main purpose of BIM is to make the entire construction process more efficient through simpler processes where all information is collected in one place. The earlier correct claim is formulated, the more useful BIM can
generate for the construction project. Digital conversion in the construction industry can save billions.
Communication is very important for achieving successful projects, which means that the procurement method is not entirely insignificant. Collaboration and partner projects are examples of procurement that contribute to good communication and openness in projects. Together with BIM, the projects are assumed to come very far in communication, but there are additional alternative procurement methods, such as IPD, which can further streamline processes using BIM.
One conclusion is that the potential exists in the construction industry to switch to a more digital industry, but there is less interest from the designers or companies. Good models lead to better control of time-, cost-, quality- and sustainability management, and more opportunities are available to carry out analyzes that compare results that are faster and cheaper with better quality and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The power is therefore largely on business and designers in the development of digitalization in the construction industry.
Effective processes are also achieved with productive meetings that have good quality with a good agenda. It is not the quantity of meetings that count but its quality. Towards a working approach like VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) with a smaller project group is to recommend, as well as focus on one project at a time.
A conclusion that can be taken to deal with the underestimation of the final cost in megaprojects recommends focusing on early and clear claims as well as better risk management. To bet on more pilot projects and knowledge feedback is preferable.
The different dimensions within BIM can thus be the combined happenings to move in the right direction by joining the processes in construction projects. One conclusion is that digitalization is here to stay, and it’s all about that companies in the industry are jumping on the train now, in order to live up to tomorrow’s requirements.
(Less)
