Abstract
Think tanks are a growing phenomenon in Western Europe. The majority of them possess a clear political agenda and their main goal is to spread their ideas and influence the public discourse as well as decision makers to subscribe to their ideology. This is normally done through gaining the attention of the media. However, it is not fully understood how think tanks manage to act as agenda-setters in the media. This paper investigates what it is that allows think tanks to act as agenda-setters and reach out with their ideas. This is done through a case study of the Swedish progressive think tank Katalys. Firstly, an analysis is carried out where it is concluded that Katalys actually has acted as an agenda-setter. Secondly, interviews are conducted with writers from Swedish news magazines that have written about a specific publication from Katalys as well as with the head of the think tank.
The findings indicate that think tanks heavily rely upon social networks to spread their ideas and gain influence in the media. Further research can be conducted on the impact that ideology and economic resources has when it comes to acting as an agenda-setter as a think tank. (Less)
