Abstract
The “nya gymnasielagen” brought with it a risk that teacher’s marks and attendance rate reports can be a basis for whether or not newly arrived immigrant students can have a continued residence permit. Many teachers who have criticized the law have had worries for the power given to them concerning individual student’s possibilities to obtain residence permits. A striking feature in the debate is that the law can challenge the professional ethics of the teachers.
The Swedish Migration Agency, however, states that the teachers have not been given any new tasks or responsibilities. They are supposed to go on doing their jobs.

Scientific research has clarified that teachers on different levels have different ethic perspectives to consider in their work. Moreover, the shifting perspective can be vague and incompatible. This might lead to a ethical dilemma concerning what action the teacher should, or should not, take. Based on a descriptive method this paper has looked into teacher’s ethical dilemmas in implementing the “nya gymna-sielagen”. The paper has lined out and problemized some of the ethic per-spectives the teachers have had to consider, Furthermore, the paper has made use of normative theory of ethics, all in order to illustrate the teacher’s ethical di-lemmas.
Through interviews and text analysis I have made it clear that the teachers do sense that implementation of the “nya gymnasielagen” has left them with ethical dilemmas of various kinds. These dilemmas are not all of one kind, but rather moves between the different ethic perspectives that teachers have to consider. (Less)
