Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

The Satisfaction with Life Scale.
(Less)
Abstract
The essay is both a theoretical account towards a psychological understanding of autonomy and a pilot study on a new self-assessment form for self-perceived autonomy. The authors developed a stipulative definition of self-perceived autonomy based on philosophical and psychological literature: A person perceives himself as autonomous to the extent he experiences himself as able to 1) reflect upon his own
thinking and impulses, 2) be in touch with his own feelings and able to relate to the experiences of others, and 3) act according to his identity and values, in relation to that environment in which he acts over time. The definition was operationalized into three facets: 1) Thought, 2) Feeling and 3) Action, from which a self-assessment... (More)

The definition was operationalized into three facets: 1) Thought, 2) Feeling and 3) Action, from which a self-assessment form was designed. The instrument was administered to a group of southern Swedish senior citizens. In order to investigate the criterion validity of the instrument, the correlation with life-satisfaction of the test-population, according to The Satisfaction with Life Scale, was examined. The self-report questionnaire for perceived autonomy had an internal consistency of α = .70. A person's perceived ability to be in contact with his own feelings and relate to others' experiences, as well as act in and understand his surroundings, was close to significantly linked to increased satisfaction with life. Potential improvement of the instrument was discussed, followed by suggestions for future research towards an extended psychological understanding of autonomy. (Less)
