Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The current study aimed to find what motivates the start of a yoga practice and whether motivation changes over time. Subjectively experienced effects of yoga and how these correlated with current motivation were also explored. Correlations between motivation and characteristics of yoga such as frequency, duration, if the participants were yoga teachers, age, gender, experience of community, intention and non-physical yoga practice were also investigated. The sample consisted of 450 Swedish yoga practitioners who responded to a survey. The result revealed physical and psychological motives behind beginning a yoga practice, and t-tests showed that most motives were even more important in the current practice. The effects that participants... (More)
The current study aimed to find what motivates the start of a yoga practice and whether motivation changes over time. The sample consisted of 450 Swedish yoga practitioners who responded to a survey. The result revealed physical and psychological motives behind beginning a yoga practice, and t-tests showed that most motives were even more important in the current practice. The effects that participants reported the most were increased every-day experience of well-being and increased experience of mindfulness during the session. Correlational analyses indicated that there were correlations between effects and current motives. The results from t-tests, chi-squared tests, and correlational analyses indicated that all of the characteristics mentioned above had an impact on the current motives. Participants who e.g. dedicate themselves to non-physical yoga practice scored higher on among others spirituality. Further research should investigate motivation and effects deeper by means of standardized measures and qualitative methods. (Less)
