Abstract
The purpose of the study was to see how unit managers use their discretion in relation to their imposed responsibility for a health-promoting work environment in the municipal sector. With the help of six different unit managers we conducted a qualitative study in which, with the help of a vignette study, we conducted interviews to get answers to our questions. It is important in this modern era within cost efficiency and harder work climates that unit managers are not forgotten and their relevance to healthcare work. Other studies show a decrease of healthcare workers and showing an increase in sick leave in healthcare work which shows the evermore need of health promotion work. Further studies show that the task as a unit manager is increasingly more difficult since the workload is more demanding. One conclusion in our study was that different health factors are seen differently among the unit managers. Although there was a lot of consistency among them, there was also a lot of factors that differed. Another conclusion was that unit managers had the possibility to do health-promotion work, but that their work was slightly limited due to the organizations limits and demands of cost efficiency. The third and last conclusion was that even though their work had a lot of autonomy, there was not a lot of options for health-promotion efforts. The main reason to accomplish health-promotion work was due to the unit managers themselves and their own discretion and leadership. (Less)
