Abstract
Aggression is an externalizing behaviour that causes harm and suffering across the globe. Disinhibition is believed to play a central role in all forms of externalizing behaviours. Studies on aggression have found a link between empathy and aggression, however to our knowledge no previous studies have investigated whether empathy moderates the link between disinhibition and aggression. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between disinhibition, empathy and aggression. The sample consisted of 325 participants aged 18-25. A cross sectional design was utilized, where participants took a survey consisting of three test batteries: ESI-BV, AQ-RSV and IRI. Gender differences were found for disinhibition and empathy, but not... (More)

A cross sectional design was utilized, where participants took a survey consisting of three test batteries: ESI-BV, AQ-RSV and IRI. Gender differences were found for disinhibition and empathy, but not for aggression as a joint construct. Disinhibition and empathy explained 48 % of the variance in aggression. Among the two subscales of empathy included in the study, neither Perspective Taking nor Empathic Concern achieved significant β-values predicting aggression as a joint construct, although significant β-values were found on the subscale level of aggression. Furthermore, no moderation effect was found for either measure of empathy. The results indicate that interventions focusing on helping individuals inhibit their impulses might reduce aggression. Additionally, our findings confirm previous research highlighting the role of disinhibition in the expression of aggression, while the link between empathy and aggression appears to depend on which aspects of the two constructs are being measured. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
