The purpose of this study was to investigate how social workers in the addiction care experienced what factors might be important when it comes to leaving the abuse and achieving drug freedom. The study follows the qualitative method in which four social workers on a support housing for adult addicts have been interviewed. The interviews were semi-structured and conducted during a personal meeting. The interviews have subsequently been transcribed and analyzed on the basis of the concepts of motivation, participation and ambivalence. The theories that have been used have been motivational work, empowerment and motivational interviewing(MI). Factors that emerge as important for the change work are that there is a good relationship with someone who believes in the individual's ability to change, who listens and is there as a focal point. Factors that involve stable conditions are also important, such as housing and employment. Changed habits, motivationand social interaction are also important. However, the emphasis is on the social worker's ability to listen to the client and have insight and understanding of the client's ambivalence during the change process. The social worker's challenge lies in constantly finding the client where she is and having it as a starting point in the work. (Less)
