- Det finns några pågående projekt som provocerar fram väldigt många och starka åsikter men få har involverat så många kvalificerade och uttalanden som Nobelcenter som planerades att byggas på Blasieholmen i Stockholm. Jag vill därför utforska projektet, läsa in vad som utmärkte vinnaren, vad som nu bromsade det samt utforska hur ett alternativ hade sett ut som jobbar med kritiken men ändå är placerat på Blasieholmen.
Vilken kritik menar jag, och mot vad? Redan 1911 försökte Nobelstiftelsen, som förvaltar Alfred Nobels förmögenhet och ansvarar för nobelpriset, bygga ett Nobelcenter att dela ut priset i. Den gången ritades det vinnande förslaget av Ferdinand Boberg men det möttes av hård kritik. Bland annat upplevdes det för internationellt. Planerna lades på is och prisutdelningen kom att göras i Konserthuset och Nobelfesten, den högtidliga middagen efter, kom att hållas i Stadshuset.
Mitt syfte med ex-jobbet är att utforska och testa om hur ett Nobelcenter på Blasieholmen som möter kritiken skulle kunna se ut. Målet är alltså inte att knäppa Chipperfield på fingrarna med det perfekta förslaget, det är lärandet genom testandet och utforskandet, bland annat genom analyser av relevanta referenser, som är det viktigaste. Med det sagt presenterar jag ett resultat av mitt utforskande i slutet av rapporten men det är inte det sista ordet i hur ett Nobelcenter på Blasieholmen borde se ut. (Less) - Popular Abstract

By first studying the competition, the winner and the critique it faced I then want to explore what a Nobel centre that tries to meet both critique and program might look like. - In this thesis I’m investigating the project to build a Nobel centre in central Stockholm. By first studying the competition, the winner and the critique it faced I then want to explore what a Nobel centre that tries to meet both critique and program might look like. The focus of the thesis lies in the investigation and the learning by exploring, the result in the end should be regarded as how far my study took me not as a proposal like Chipperfield’s or any of the other competitor’s. By studying references and using theory for city building, reading Gordon Cullen and Camillo Sitte, my approach is that I start with the different spaces that already exist on the site. I identify them and in an attempt to strengthen their qualities I get the rough footprint for the Nobel centre. This is done in conjunction with the analysis of the critique and the directives I set up for myself: keeping two of the three buildings razed in Chipperfield’s proposal, in placement and character be part of the maritime city typology among others. Another key part of my project, very inspired by Cullen. is how my Nobel centre separates and condensates the spaces surrounding it, further articulating the sequence you will experience when taking a stroll on Blasieholmen. During the studying of the references the question of what a Stockholm-architecture might be, rises. One answer I find lies in the tradition of placing prominent buildings towards the water, and among those many face the water with an arcade. I use the arcade as a theme, using verticality in the facade to insinuate it. Smaller distance between the openings between the floors rather within them create that verticality. In Moreau Kusunoki’s Helsinki Guggenheim winner I find a concept that well handles a massive volume and varied program: breaking it up in different volumes. This is also a good strategy to in scale further relate to the old buildlings of the maritime typology. The result is a building with three main pieces: the fundament, the putty and the ellipses. The fundament is the collection of smaller volumes. The putty is the transparent, climate protected public space that binds the fundament together. Above them rises the relatively transparent ellipses that houses the functions that are meant to invite you to the building. The bigger ellipse houses the auditorium for the prize ceremony. Together with the smaller ellipse which houses bar and restaurant, they mirror the relation between Nationalmuseum and Ostindiefararen in scale and alignment. In the end of the report I present the result of my research and some reflections on the challenges of the project and what to develope moving forward. (Less)
