- Abstract
- “A kinder form of state” is what Arend Lijphart called democracies in which proportional electoral systems had been adopted, since these states gave priority to welfare, climate protection and foreign aid in greater extent compared to democracies that had adopted a majoritarian electoral system. In fact, some of the results from Lijpharts research about the effects of proportional electoral systems resembles such effects that, in other political scientist’s research, are said to generate state legitimacy. Therefore, it is the hypothesis of this thesis that proportional electoral systems generate more state legitimacy than majoritarian electoral systems might do. The theory, however, says that there must also be good quality of government for the connection to be detectable. By collecting data from 38 countries, the results show that there seems to be a positive connection between proportional electoral systems and higher state legitimacy, but under the condition that there is good quality of government in the country. The connection is not detectable in countries where quality of government is low, which indicates that the theory of the thesis is correct to some extent. (Less)
