Another important matter to stress is that the conflict between Germany and Brussels over Nord Stream II has become a focal point for a much bigger topic – the discussion on what political areas the union should control and what should be kept on a national level. This paper argues that both Brussels and Berlin have very different views on energy security because of different views on eastern Europe. German views on Russian natural gas is also influenced by the historically effective Ostpolitik and Berlin is a more liberal in contrast to the European Union’s relation to Russia which is more of based in realism.
