Abstract
Brexit has been one of the perhaps most circumscribed political subjects since the referendum
in 2016. The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union will affect many,
especially the people of Northern Ireland. Much of the brexit negotiations have come to
circulate around this UK region because of its unique situation. Northern Ireland is a deeply
divided society, where unionists on the one hand wants to strengthen the region’s position

within the United Kingdom, and nationalists on the other wants to unite the region with
Ireland. This essay studies the possible implications that brexit might have on the people of
Northern Ireland and the political stalemate in the region. It does so by analysing the arguably
the most influential discourse, the British Government’s, on Northern Ireland’s role in the
brexit negotiations with a version of Faircloughs critical discourse analysis, and comparing
the results to the existing literature on the subject to further deepen the analysis. The essay
finds that the British Government’s discourse in different ways preserve the status-quo in
Northern Ireland, and by doing so gives unionists and nationalists both fear and hope for the
future. (Less)
