Abstract
During the last couple of years Myanmar has attracted international media attention
for what is known as the “Rohingya crisis”. Rohingya have been fleeing the country
after clashes between Rohingya and Buddhists in Rakhine state which have been
followed by increased violence and oppression. The clashes and tensions between
the Buddhist majority and the Rohingya minority in the country aren’t new
occurrences however and have a long history. Identity and narratives are central in
the tensions between the two parties. The aim of this study is to examine the
Buddhist and Rohingya narratives and identities beginning in 1982 and the adoption
of the citizenship law until today to better understand the situation between the two

of the citizenship law until today to better understand the situation between the two
parties. The study also aims to examine how the understanding of the narratives can
give an understanding of why or why not there are possibilities for the parties to
reconcile with one another. This will be conducted through the use of an identity
theory and a reconciliation theory as the theoretical framework. The results show
that the Buddhist and Rohingya narratives of the perception of one another and of
what has happened are clashing to such a degree that the possibilities for
reconciliation are hindered. (Less)
