Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the experiences of professionals within certain Social services working with people seeking help for an unwanted sexuality. This unwanted sexuality can involve buying sex, experiencing loss of control in sexual context and/or unwanted sexual fantasies. The aim of this study was to analyze the experiences of professionals within certain Social services working with people seeking help for an unwanted sexuality. This unwanted sexuality can involve buying sex, experiencing loss of control in sexual context and/or unwanted sexual fantasies. In contrast to other studies in this subject, which often debates the professionals experiences of working therapeutically with convicted sex offenders, this study was aimed to get knowledge about working preventively. We conducted six semi-structured interviews with professionals who work supportively and/or therapeutically with the target group in different ways. The purpose was to get a deeper knowledge of how the professionals argue and discuss their target group and the work involving them. The data was analyzed by using Antonovsky’s theory of coherence (KASAM) and Lazarus and Folksman’s coping theory. After analyzing the data we came to the conclusion that the participants viewed their target group as suffering from their own behaviour and highly motivated in understanding this behaviour. Moreover, experiencing that their work led in a good direction and being able to protect people in risk of being sexually assaulted motivated the participants in their work. (Less)
