Abstract
This study examined how counsellors within Swedish health care experience termination of therapy. The study also examined the bonds which are established between counsellor and patient during the therapy sessions, specifically in which ways these bonds affected the counsellors’ experiences of termination. The study was qualitative and carried out by semi-structured interviews with seven counsellors. The counsellors represented different areas within the specialised health care, where the duration of the therapy sessions could differ and where the reasons for termination could vary. The study was qualitative and carried out by semi-structured interviews with seven counsellors. The counsellors represented different areas within the specialised health care, where the duration of the therapy sessions could differ and where the reasons for termination could vary. To analyse our empirical data we have utilised the Attachment theory with focus on adult relationships, the caregiving system, secure base and separation. The study confirmed that emotional bonds are established towards the counsellor, as well as towards the patient, in the therapy relationship. These bonds may have affected the counsellors’ experiences of termination in different ways. For some, the attachment bonds made the termination more difficult and caused feelings of grief and loss. Others argued that a strong bond made the termination easier due to the confidence that the patient was secure enough to cope outside therapy. The results also showed how crisis impacted the establishment of attachment bonds between patient and counsellor. The study concluded that the emotional bonds were not dependent on the duration of the therapy, but rather the patients’ difficult situation or crisis and the availability of the counsellor. Finally, the study also showed how counsellors tended to keep the door ajar, as a way to avoid permanent separation. (Less)
