Many scholars however call for the need for the discussion to adopt a more nuanced and objective tone. By taking on the form of an exploratory case study this paper aims to contribute to the efforts of building a wider and empirically based debate around Corporate Social Responsibility and it contributions to human development. This case study analyses British Petroleum’s CSR strategy and the factors driving them towards taking social action through the lens of the Capability Theory and the Stakeholder Approach. The paper finds that British Petroleum’s CSR initiatives are mainly guided by self-interest and do thus only address human development to a certain extent. (Less)
