Abstract
This master thesis work concerns the effect of high-alumina additives on the selfdesication of concrete. The purpose of the work was to examine the possibilities to optimize the binder-content of concrete with regards to self-desiccation. Two highalumina additives have been examined. In the experiments 10% of the binder mass has been replaced with one of these additives. Commercially available cement products of the cement types CEM I, CEM II an CEM III have been used for the experiments.
An increased self-desiccation enables a reduction of Portland clinker. A reduction of the amount of Portland clinker reduces the climate-impact of the construction since cement production is a source of carbondioxide emissions.

An increased self-desiccation enables a reduction of Portland clinker. A reduction of the amount of Portland clinker reduces the climate-impact of the construction since cement production is a source of carbondioxide emissions.
Relative humidity(RH) measurements have been performed on concrete samples w/c 0.38 containing CEM II an CEM III between 30–90 days after casting. RHmeasurements and measurements of developed heat effect have been performed on samples with cement paste w/c 0.38 and w/c 0.5 containing cement types CEM I, CEM II and CEM III.
High-alumina additives bind a large amount of water during hydration due to the chemical composition af the hydration products. In experiments on concrete, this has been shown to give an increased self-desication. RH in concrete samples after 30 days was reduced with 5% and 7% respectively for samples with CEM II and CEM III when 10% of the binder was replaced with high-alumina additives.
Measurements of the developed heat-effect indicates that the early hydration is affected when replacing 10% of the binder with high-alumina additives. This is linked to the change in chemical composition of the hydrated cement paste.
A part of this work has been to further develop a method for RH-measurements on small samples of cement paste. This method has the potential to simplify further work on optimizing binder-content with regards to self-desiccation.
The results indicate that addition of high–alumina additives increases the self– desiccation of concrete. This could be a way forward to reduce use of cement while still meeting demands for moisure safety. (Less)

(Less)
