Abstract
In 2017, an inclusive outdoor area was initiated in Nordvest, Copenhagen, in order to break
down the barriers between homeless migrants and residents of the local neighborhood.
The presence of homeless migrants on the streets of Copenhagen has spurred much debate
and resulted in increasing uneasiness among the domiciled population. This has led to an
increase in the criminalization of the behavior and survival strategies connected to
homelessness. Previous research has dealt with the stigma attached to homelessness and

been found that physical surroundings play an important role when it comes to how
individuals position themselves and consequently relate to others. This bachelor thesis
discusses how the inclusive outdoor area influence interactions between the two groups and
asks to what extent we can rely on physical surroundings to facilitate these.
The case is examined through participant observation within the outdoor area, interviews, and
analysis of internal documents. The theoretical framework is based on stigma, urban order,
and conceptualizations of space.
The conclusions drawn suggest that physical surroundings do play an important role in
creating a level playing field between the two groups. It is argued that while physical spaces
are important, frameworks for initiating interactions are needed if issues of stigma and urban
order are to be overcome. (Less)
