Six qualitative interviews have been conducted with counselors in psychiatric care units in the south of Sweden. The interviews focused on different themes, pertaining the individual’s participation in society. These themes are central aspects of breaking social isolation. Having a job, a social network or/and some other kind of occupation is essential to increase a sense of context and decrease the effects of stigmatization. Counselors pay attention to this in their action plans.
The results of this study show that individuals with mental illness experience a stigma in society, which in many cases can lead to a social isolation that can increase their mental problems. The effect of the stigma and the social isolation as a consequence of mental illness leads to that these individuals end up far from the opportunities to participate in society and the labor market.
Social workers and above all counselors in psychiatric care units have a desire to reduce the stigmatization and social isolation of the target group and achieve empowerment among their patients. In this study, their knowledge and experiences about the above mentioned issues have been examined. (Less)
