Developing Joint Replenishment Strategy through transport coordination and optimal packaging

- Abstract
- This master thesis report is an analysis of upstream supply chain of spare parts of
an engineering equipment manufacturing company. The report follows a case study
approach to come up with a joint replenishment strategy in order to reduce logistics
costs and also meet the customer’s demand, by analysing the current logistics cost
for the upstream of supply chain where the spare parts are shipped from the supplier
to their central warehouse and also the packaging system for the spare parts.
The initial analysis was made to determine the optimal batch size for a single item
from each supplier. These items were considered by the authors as representative of
the current replenishment system. Since the spare parts with higher demand... (More) - This master thesis report is an analysis of upstream supply chain of spare parts of

The initial analysis was made to determine the optimal batch size for a single item
from each supplier. These items were considered by the authors as representative of
the current replenishment system. Since the spare parts with higher demand lead to
the most of inventory costs (80-20 rule). The next part of the analysis was to
understand the current packaging system of the spare parts and suggest to the
company possible changes in the packaging system that can increase the efficiency
of the logistics performance and enhance transport coordination.
The logistics performance refers to the reduction of multiple material handling,
efficient use of storage space and efficient fill rate during transportation i.e. overall
reduction in the logistics cost. With the analysis made for optimal batch size that
assists in meeting customer’s demand and with efficient packaging system for the
spare parts that reduces the logistics cost, the authors proposed a joint replenishment
strategy for the suppliers which gave suggestions to the company on ways to reduce
costs but still meet customer’s demand.
