(Jeffery, 2012) While children playing, they see through
the world which children experience their world and the
world of others. Yet despite of fact that play is beneficial to
children, the opportunity of interaction and parental engagement
are limited nowadays in the digital era(Aleeya,
2019).
This design research t is started with a question
how toy design can influence to children healthy developments

To be specific, the fear of darkness was selected as
a main subject on in this project because many children
have unpleasant experiences with dark night. There is a
study which proved that by play therapy which parents
using a narrative made children overcome the phobia.
Also, the project contents how toys design can
provide opportunities to develop children positive and
inclusive perspectives by playing toys.
The following questions areas starting points on
the project :
How might we make a toy that help children overcome the fear
of darkness?
8
How might we create a toy or story that awakens children’s potential
courage through the play?
How might we suggest new type of toys characters that represents
people surrounding us?
The design concept had developed in partnership
with BRIO, a toy company in Sweden. Especially,
since the BRIO World, a main train set toy series of the
company, has presented ’the real world’, I looked for new
possibilities with unrealistic situation, ’Night’. By using
evening environments in a play with a narrative, it would
be new experience for children to have as well as transition
to pleasant moments from fear of darkness, coincided
with the company’s vision, the happy childhood.
The BRIO Night World is a train set for encouraging
children’s imagination and brave moments. The
theme of toys is based on a story, a night journey. The play
set consists of story, train systems, and character figures.
By observing children train play, children made their
own play scenarios by given materials such as book and
toys freely. This new toys would open up for new ways of
playing and influencing to children’s healthy mindset and
perspective. (Less)
