- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to investigate the experience of what impacts well-being in seven young adults with self-reported experience of self-harm. The participants have previously participated in a survey-based study and reported self-harm at some point. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The results suggested that participants experience an external influence on their well-being where occupation, guidance from others, being in phase with your peers and different life events impact well-being, while participants deal with decreased well-being by being strong, putting on a happy face, and by destructive behaviors and in some cases self-harm. The participants also described a surrounding that in most cases... (More)

The participants also described a surrounding that in most cases did not notice they were not feeling well or acted to help them even though there were signs of their distress like irritation and tiredness. Self-destructive behaviors and self-harm were experienced as a consequence of decreased well-being and a strategy to deal with this psychological distress. The results are useful for healthcare professionals who meet young adults because they can facilitate an increased attentiveness of both self-destructive behavior and general psychological distress in this group, facilitate a better understanding of what the self-destructive behavior stands for, and facilitate a more empathic response.
