Abstract
This study aims to summarize some of the climate change related challenges for city centers in Sweden by using the city Helsingborg as an example. The approach is wide and includes three different dimensions: City planning, shopping in city centers and mobility. By doing so the reader will see climate change related challenges from different perspectives which all affect each other. Shopping and mobility is two of many more activities that occurs in city centers. The reason why these two are highlighted is because they are both activities that has a big impact for humans in cities and also for the fact that they need a lot of space. With climate change there will be a lot of different challenges to handle, in this study focus is to... (More)

Shopping and mobility is two of many more activities that occurs in city centers. The reason why these two are highlighted is because they are both activities that has a big impact for humans in cities and also for the fact that they need a lot of space. With climate change there will be a lot of different challenges to handle, in this study focus is to highlight warmer temperatures and heavy rainfalls. These challenges can be handled through different solutions and in the study some potential solutions will be presented. The solutions that will be highlighted have humans in focus and aims to make the place more resilient for climate change and at the same time give the place qualities that humans tend to like. That brings space back to the subject, to make room for climate adaptation some activities (such as shopping and mobility) needs to give space for example green infrastructure.

The empirical material includes observations in Helsingborg’s city center and documents from the organization Helsingborgs Stad. In the study it will be argued that Helsingborg’s city center has room for improvement concerning climate adaptation regarding heat and water from heavy rainfalls. There is a lack of green infrastructure which can bring several positive functions such as cooling the temperature or delay water form heavy rainfalls. Bringing more green infrastructure to the place will besides those functions also improve the place for people, which in their turn is critical for shops profitability. This study shows that climate adaption strategies can fill a multipurpose from social aspects (human’s wellbeing) to aspects concerning engineering (water management). We know that climate change is going to happen and planners now have to ask them self how city center’s will handle future challenges. In the study it will be argued that collaboration between different actor is one key factor for success and also that planners will have the future in mind and avoid short-term solutions. For example doesn’t lack of car parking spaces in city centers need to be handled with more parking spaces if the purpose is better access with cars, more likely the solution will include long term strategies to get more people to avoid driving car to the city center.
