Abstract
This thesis will examine the correlation regarding the existence of aircraft carriers and security in Great Britain. The thesis will assume that Kenneth Waltz anarchy from the neorealist school of thought exist in the international sphere. At the same time the thesis will investigate whether Great Britain can call itself a great power today. Combining these arguments might indicate that a lack of aircraft carriers is a security concern for the state and therefor justifies the constructions of new aircraft carriers regardless of the cost and risk. This will be investigated through the securitization theory with the aim to see if aircraft carriers has been securitized. A case study into Great Britain’s new aircraft carrier program, including... A case study into Great Britain’s new aircraft carrier program, including the new carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, will provide the empirical data to support this thesis. The case study will also include empirical studies into conflicts were British aircraft carriers have contributed to achieving the goals of the operation, including among others the Falklands war which couldn’t have been won without carrier support.
