- Malmö is a city that has been struggling with social segregation for years, with inequality gaps growing even as the genereal standard of living improves. Reports indicate that to break this trend long term social investments are needed, rather than quick fixes. Sensitive interventions that have an integrating effect.
Southern Rosengård, established during the miljonprogram years, faces challenges in social exclusion as well as lower average income and level of education than Malmö in general. New preschools are continually constructed, but in Rosengård many so called apartment preschools are still in use. These less than ideal preschool spaces as well as a lower average preschool enrollment than Malmö’s average and a high turnover in... Southern Rosengård, established during the miljonprogram years, faces challenges in social exclusion as well as lower average income and level of education than Malmö in general. New preschools are continually constructed, but in Rosengård many so called apartment preschools are still in use. These less than ideal preschool spaces as well as a lower average preschool enrollment than Malmö’s average and a high turnover in preschool teachers paints a picture of a preschool situation facing a lot of challenges.
The science is clear on this topic: Preschool enrollment promotes social inclusion, and these effects are even stronger in areas facing social challenges. Social investments have by far the largest “revenue” early on in the lives of the citizens. Malmö municipality also expresses a wish to densify and introduce new functions into this late-modernistic environment, where the large scale courtyards are put to a more intensive use.
This situation calls for a new kind of preschool!
Which potetials exist within the preschool building typology in this environment? This master thesis explores the potential for the future of preschool buildings in southern Rosengård. (Less)
