Abstract
The majority of all social work includes two crucial components. The first component relates to the importance of the relationship between the social worker and the client and requires the social worker to possess qualities and abilities that promote a strong working alliance. The second component regards the social worker as the working tool, a view that emphasizes the need for the social worker to be endowed with health and well-being in order to care for others. Therefore, it is of relevance to attend to and develop the two above mentioned aspects for an enhanced social work. The aim of this study was to explore how social workers’ own practice of mindfulness could affect these two aspects. Through qualitative, semi-structured... (More)

Therefore, it is of relevance to attend to and develop the two above mentioned aspects for an enhanced social work. The aim of this study was to explore how social workers’ own practice of mindfulness could affect these two aspects. Through qualitative, semi-structured interviews, six social workers’ perceived effects of their mindfulness practice in their everyday work were explored. Transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed with an approach based on grounded theory. The participants reported positive influences from their mindfulness practice on skills that promote the working alliance and their ability to exercise control over own reactions that can potentially impair the treatment. The participants also reported improved abilities in using techniques to lessen work-related stress and improvements in their attitude and practice of self-care. These results conform to previous findings. (Less)
