Abstract
The aim of this study was to further understand quality of life (QoL) among adolescents with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) by investigating what they regard of the concept of QoL, their own QoL, as well as the QoL-instrument LkBS. This was done using semi-structured interviews with seven adolescents (12-18 years), which were analyzed with thematic analysis. From the analysis four main themes were chosen: Bipolar Disorder – Shackles and Freedom, Prerequisites for Quality of Life, The Use of a Quality of Life Instrument and Vague Reference Points. The concept of QoL was perceived as important and much needed, where treatment and social support were related to satisfactory QoL. Unwanted side-effects, limited treatment effect, stigma as... The concept of QoL was perceived as important and much needed, where treatment and social support were related to satisfactory QoL. Unwanted side-effects, limited treatment effect, stigma as well as social exclusion were related to worse QoL. LkBS was perceived as comprehensible, relevant and as potentially helpful in facilitating their own and others’ understanding of their QoL. But it was also perceived as limited and facile where their answers didn’t necessarily reflect their reality. They also mentioned complicating factors in state-dependent memory and the presence of interindividual differences between adolescents with PBD. In conclusion, the study showed that QoL is deserving of more attention where the continued participation of adolescents may prove valuable. Though studies with more participants and a psychometric validation is required to be able to say more about how generalizable the results are. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
