Abstract
This report focuses on the topic of economic growth and education. The aim is to investigate the potential relationship between education and economic growth amongst the OECD member states. Together with theoretical perspectives and earlier research I conduct an empirical study aiming to identify if a higher degree of education has a positive impact on economic growth. Education is measured in total years of education and tertiary years of education. In the study two different regressions are used to determine the education’s probable impact on GDP per capita growth. The data used ranges over a forty-five year time period and incorporates all the OECD’s 36 members states. The two regressions are identical except that the education... (More)
This report focuses on the topic of economic growth and education. The two regressions are identical except that the education variables differ. The construction of the regressions is based on Solow’s theory. The conclusion of this report is that there is a negative relationship between a higher education level and economic growth, at least within the OECD. The discussion brings up different possible reasons that have affected the negative outcome. However, the topic of exclusion of quality with regard to education is brought up as one of the possible explanations of the negative result. This study provides evidence that future research between the relationship of education and economic growth is essential. (Less)
