Online behaviors have consequences on mental health, the purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine what the dominant dating apps and social media platforms of our time facilitate and how our online behavior in regard to dating practices effect mental health. The data of the essay was collected through five semi-structured interviews featuring five participants aged 18-25 from a multitude of backgrounds. Participants gave a detailed account of their usage of apps and social media for romantic purposes and were asked about their opinions and feelings on the apps and platforms and whether their expectations had changed with long-term use. All participants involved agreed that dating apps were rather shallow due to their excessive focus on visual content, some managed to find meaningful connections through them while others had a harder time and were experiencing increased levels of disappointment with long-term use. In established partnerships, virtual contact proved to be an important aspect of bond-building, but also a source of anxiety. The dominant dating apps and platforms of our time facilitate consumerist, compulsive, addictive and impulsive behaviors rather than meaningful interactions and bond building, as a result, user’s mental health is effected negatively.
