Abstract
This study is a critical analysis about the meaning of labor within a Swedish consultant company. The aim of this study is to showcase, describe and evaluate employees attitudes towards their profession as a sales consultant. This study is a critical analysis about the meaning of labor within a Swedish consultant company. The aim of this study is to showcase, describe and evaluate employees attitudes towards their profession as a sales consultant. Therefore the study focus on identifying and analyzing the structures of meaning at the workplace, and the relationship between the employees and the organizational culture. What does it mean to be sales consultant and how does the employee identify with his/her assigned role? Where and how does the employee place work in his/ her living? By adopting ethnographic methodology, participating observation and informal conversations this study will explore the meaning of work. Through comparison against Roland Paulsens concepts of ’empty labour’ and David Graebners concepts of ’bullshit jobs’ the broad framing of these questions narrows and relies on that premisses. But, the ambition is to critically review predetermined conceptions and ideas in order to highlight new profound insights and knowledge. Meaning and work are both multifaceted concepts within the sociological discipline and is surrounded by notions, perceptions, opinions and cultural norms. That is why this study with great endeavor will try to delineate these notions in the light of the empirical context. Therefore the ambition isn’t about seeking any universal conclusions. Rather, through ideographic method and thick descriptions the in-depth study can offer the reader possibilities to draw parallels to his/her own experiences. The main theme is the concept of meaning in relation to labour. Through analysis of hermeneutics and symbolism, questions like how and why might capture the reasons behind employees feel that working as a sales consultant is meaningless. And what significance does meaninglessness have for an employee’s life? (Less)
