- The fashion industry has always been a synonym of new trends, creativity, design and a form of expression and individuality. Notwithstanding, the impact on the environment and the development of societies derived from the production and consumption of fashion has been underestimated. The current system is extremely polluting and wasteful, and it is closely related to poverty, gender issues and exploitation of workers. - The fashion industry has always been a synonym of new trends, creativity, design and a form of expression and individuality. Notwithstanding, the impact on the environment and the development of societies derived from the production and consumption of fashion has been underestimated. The current system is extremely polluting and wasteful, and it is closely related to poverty, gender issues and exploitation of workers. Therefore, an urgent paradigm shift is needed because the scale that the fashion industry operates nowadays is unsustainable. The research focuses on the transition of the fashion industry in Spain towards a sustainable future from two different perspectives, from the brands and the consumers. Through a qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews, the thesis draws the conclusion that although a more sustainable approach in the clothing industry is increasing in the brand’s business strategy and consumer’s mind-set, is still far away from achieving global sustainable development goals. Therefore, an urgent systemic change is needed and must be achieved through a cross-collaboration between government and policy makers, brands and consumers. (Less)
