- Abstract
- This thesis aims to contribute to the theological discussion of how a critical and constructive pneumatology could be seen in the context of the Church of Sweden today. To achieve this purpose, I analyze a Lutheran view of the Holy Spirit in the confession of the Church of Sweden and a feminist criticism. The questions asked are: How does a Lutheran view of the Holy Spirit look according to the confession of the Church of Sweden? How does feminist criticism of the question of the Holy Spirit look within the systematic theology of later decades? and How can an encounter between a Lutheran view of the Holy Spirit based on the confession of the Church of Sweden and a contemporary feminist criticism contribute to a critical and constructive... The questions asked are: How does a Lutheran view of the Holy Spirit look according to the confession of the Church of Sweden? How does feminist criticism of the question of the Holy Spirit look within the systematic theology of later decades? and How can an encounter between a Lutheran view of the Holy Spirit based on the confession of the Church of Sweden and a contemporary feminist criticism contribute to a critical and constructive pneumatology in the context of the Church of Sweden today?
In the first part of this thesis, I analyze Luther’s Small Catechism, Luther’s Large Catechism, the Schmalkaldic articles and the classic study of the Holy Spirit of the Danish twentieth-century theologian Regin Prenter. In the second part, I turn to the feminist criticism using material from the American theologians Elisabeth A. Johnson and Rebecca Button Prichard and from the British theologian Anne Claar Thomasson-Rosingh. The third part of the thesis aims to make a constructive contribution to the discussion on pneumatology by comparing my previous results.
Based on the analysis of my material I draw some conclusions. First of all a contemporary critical and constructive pneumatology needs to be rooted in both tradition and institution as well as in a critical reflection. That becomes clear in the example of the free Spirit and the idea that the Holy Spirit can be abused both in Luther’s pneumatology when the work of the Spirit is bound to the church through Word and Sacrament and in the feminist criticism’s attempt to “set the Spirit free”. Secondly, the doctrine of the Holy Spirit has an impact on a church practice and an increased awareness of the Spirit can lead to positive consequences, such as in human’s relationships to God, to each other and to the creation. Finally, there are not just differences between a Lutheran view of the Holy Spirit in the confessions of the Church of Sweden and in the feminist criticism. The creative Spirit which is life-giving and a sign of the present God is a similarity and a possible starting point for further theological discussions about the Holy Spirit. (Less)
