- The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how design-related copying is described on Diet Prada’s Instagram account and how their activity is received in the fashion press. Further on, the aim is to examine the discourses concerning the relationship between a copy and an original that can be discerned in the Diet Prada-debate. There is existing research on the effects of design-related copying from a legal perspective. In this dissertation, the phenomenon is instead approached from a cultural and social perspective. Through a discourse analysis, this dissertation discusses how design-related copying receives its meaning through several different discourses and how the design-related copy is described through image composition generates signs that define and differentiate the design-related copy from the original. This dissertation also shows that the fashion press takes a questioning stance towards Diet Prada’s definition of design copying, but without critiquing Diet Prada's actions. A further examination of the Diet Prada-debate lets us identify discourses about copies and the original. These are discussed within this dissertation, in relation to existing research about copies originals, and authenticity in contemporary art. (Less)
