Abstract
The project emerged from a fascination of light and darkness. With developing technologies and more knowledge about the health aspects of light and darkness, the field of lighting is becoming more elaborate.

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki once said “we find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates”. I could not agree more. Our way of perceiving light and darkness is influenced by the physical properties of a space.

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki once said “we find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates”. I could not agree more. Our way of perceiving light and darkness is influenced by the physical properties of a space.

Within the world of lighting, most of the theories are based on the physical entities, leaving most of the visual experience aside, due to its complexity. The risk by doing this is that many aspects of the visual world are being forgotten or ignored. What we see is not less reliable than the physical measurements. The visual world just tends to be too complex to always be measured physically. In addition, light can be experienced very differently depending on the spatial situation. By using light, not only can we affect how people use a space - we can change the whole perception of the character of such space.

When exploring the different aspects of light and darkness, various illuminated paths emerged into a vast landscape of layers and metaphors relating thereto. Since there are so many interesting entrances into light and darkness, the thesis is designed as a multifaceted collage where light and darkness are permitted to reflect against and interact with poetry, dichotomies and norm-creativity. Through this process new doors were opened into the architectural design process.
