Abstract
No matter how much is written about the Swedish witch trials we never seem to get tired of hearing of them, trying to understand them and be horrified by them. This essay explores one of few, relatively unknown parts of the Swedish witch trials: the trials that took place on the Åland Islands between the years 1666-1668. Not as much attention has been paid to these trials, probably because the Åland Islands no longer is a part of Sweden and Finnish research, because of language barriers, mostly focus on the trials that took place on the mainland. This essay describes and analyzes these trials from a legal history perspective.

This essay describes and analyzes these trials from a legal history perspective.

In order to describe the trials the essay begins with a chapter regarding the Swedish legal system in the 17th century. At this point, the dominant legal philosophy was the natural law. In the spirit of the natural law the old testament of the bible became part of the Swedish law in 1608. Through the judicial revolution the legal offices were given a higher status in the society. On the Åland islands, the Circuit judge Nils Psilander initiated a series of trials after a brawl in Ingby Jomala in 1666. The trials were part of Psilanders pursuit of Satan.

In the essay, a comparison is also made with the witch trials that were held in Älvdalen, Dalarna in 1668. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
