Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract

An explorative qualitative study was designed to explore the experiences of receiving assisted reproduction technology among solo mothers in Sweden. The study was conducted in collaboration with Reproduktionsmedicinskt Centrum (RMC), Skånes Universitetssjukhus (SUS). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight women, of whom four were currently in treatment and four had recently got children. Using thematic analysis seven themes were identified in the data. The findings were discussed in relation to psychological theories of crises and attachment theory, and in relation to how the attitude to motherhood is created through the interaction with the reproduction medical health care. The main conclusions in this study were that the women often felt lonelier and more vulnerable than earlier research has shown. For many, the decision of becoming a solo parent was associated with an inner conflict, that often came from a grief over not having found a partner. It was also found that the way the women thought about the donor influenced their experiences, in that a cautious approach was associated with a harder emotional process. The participants expressed fear, worry, anxiety and panic, but also happiness and gratitude of having received help. This study could be used to reach a greater understanding of the life situation of these women and also points to the importance of a holistic model of treatment. (Less)
