Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of young adults with self- reported distress, and how they perceived the psychological impact of their adversities in life. As a part of a larger research project, seven young adults were interviewed about different aspects of their well-being, self-esteem and situation in life. These semi-structured interviews were analyzed using a thematic analysis. Four major themes were identified: Direction in life, Emotional development, Being content in life and Views of their own future. This result was discussed using theories about identity development, resilience and subjective well-being. This study illuminates that the participants experiences are complex and sometimes contradictory. An... (More)

This result was discussed using theories about identity development, resilience and subjective well-being. This study illuminates that the participants experiences are complex and sometimes contradictory. An adversity can result in conflicting feelings and experiences of becoming both more resistant and more sensitive. A state of being “content” could imply high subjective well-being, but it could also imply being resigned. Seen from a developmental perspective, being resigned can suggest either a more mature identity position or regression. This complexity is, according to the authors, important to keep in mind for clinical psychologists, during assessment of young adults who seek help. This may help the professionals to be open to nuances in the clients experiences (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
