Abstract
The mission of healthcare social workers can be very inexplicit, both for other professions inside the walls of the hospital and for the healthcare social workers themselves.

The aim of this study was to look into how the mission of healthcare social workers is shaped through the proceedings around the initial contact with their patients. The chosen method was qualitative semi-structured interviews with eight healthcare social workers from four different cities in the south of Sweden. When analyzing our results, we used theories about professionalism and professional boundary work, as well as some basic theoretical understandings of street level bureaucrats’ discretion and the accomplishment of professional jurisdiction. This study found that healthcare social workers mainly establish contact with patients through other professions remittance, when they observe a patient in need of contact, or by patients own request for contact. Healthcare social workers use limitation and boundary- making strategies to make their inexplicit mission clearer, both for themselves and to other professions. By these strategies they protect themselves from undesirable work coming to their desk and they also use these strategies to pick up desired work. With this study we attempted to highlight the consequences of such “limiting strategies” for both patients and for the mission of healthcare social workers. (Less)
