- Abstract (Swedish)
- The objective of this thesis is to be used by rescue services in order to gain a deeper understanding regarding drowning and water rescue operations. By compiling research data from previous studies, statistics and opinions from rescue personal as well as experts in the field a basis is provided on which further queries within developing water rescue can be looked into for rescue services. Rescue services accounts for a majority of the diving capacity in life rescue and search, but there is a trend suggesting a slow decrease of this diving resource. Reasons for this are primarily investment heavy periods that coincide with demands for many newly educated divers.

The predominant factors that influence the outcome of a water rescue operation are listed starting with the most predominant factors as follows: time below surface, intervention from people on site, rescue team response time, the person’s age and water temperature. The rescue effort should last at least the same amount of time as the most extreme case that has been reported with a positive result (approximately 90 minutes under water). If the water temperature is very low and no other factors point to different circumstances than those of that reported case. Technical appliances like drones, sonar and underwater-robots are considered to play an important role during water rescue operations in the future for the rescue services. To further save lives education of the public in CPR and risks related to water plays a big role. (Less)
