Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to explore young women’s experiences of attempting to initiate romantic relationships through the dating app Tinder. The sample consisted of eight women between the ages of 23 and 27 years, who all had used Tinder for purposes of romantic dating. Data collection was achieved through semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis grounded in a phenomenological approach was used to thematize the phenomenon “romantic tinder-dating among young women”. The result of the present study consisted of eight themes based on the participants’ experiences: replaceability, intensity, Tinder’s position in reality, uncertainty, using others for selfish purposes, addiction, being a woman on Tinder, and self-esteem and... A thematic analysis grounded in a phenomenological approach was used to thematize the phenomenon “romantic tinder-dating among young women”. The result of the present study consisted of eight themes based on the participants’ experiences: replaceability, intensity, Tinder’s position in reality, uncertainty, using others for selfish purposes, addiction, being a woman on Tinder, and self-esteem and self-development. The result displayed a high turn-over in dating relationships, a lack of clear rules and norms within the app, a high number of rejections, increasing regard to one’s own needs and the experience of being replaceable. A high perceived sense of
control made the experience of tinder-dating more positive. The discussion highlighted the phenomenon by use of psychological individual-focused perspectives and sociological theory regarding society as a whole. The conclusion was that the phenomenon can be seen both as a symptom of our individualistic age and as a consequence of how the Tinder app changes how we relate to one another. (Less)
