- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers working with people selling sexual services perceive the purpose, effects, and normative function of the Swedish Sex Purchase Law. The study is based on six semi-structured qualitative interviews with (social workers from the field). Theories that were used to analyse the data were social constructivism, radical feminism, and liberal feminism. The results of this study showed that the social workers were supportive of the law and could see positive effects for people who are selling sexual services and for society at large. - The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers working with people selling sexual services perceive the purpose, effects, and normative function of the Swedish Sex Purchase Law. The study is based on six semi-structured qualitative interviews with (social workers from the field). Theories that were used to analyse the data were social constructivism, radical feminism, and liberal feminism. The results of this study showed that the social workers were supportive of the law and could see positive effects for people who are selling sexual services and for society at large. The answers given by the participating social workers during the interviews can be interpreted as radical feministic rather than liberal feministic, for example by arguing that women are coerced into prostitution rather than entering by free choice. According to the social workers, the law’s aim is to promote gender equality, protect women who are exposed to prostitution, and decrease prostitution in general. The participants argued that the law does have a normative effect. However, to achieve its desired results we also need ongoing work with the people the law affects, and with schools and at workplaces. They also stated that the law itself is not enough, to achieve the law’s aims the government needs to provide more resources and make preventing prostitution a priority. (Less)
